HypnoBirthing® is as much a philosophy as it is a technique. The concept of HypnoBirthing® is not new, but rather a “rebirth” of the philosophy of birthing as it existed thousands of years ago and as it was recaptured in the work of Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, an English obstetrician, who first forwarded the concept of natural birthing in the 1920s. The method teaches you that in the absence of fear and tension, severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labor.
You will gain an understanding of how the birthing muscles work in perfect harmony–as they were designed to–when your body is sufficiently relaxed. You will learn how to achieve this kind of relaxation, free of the resistance that fear creates, and you will learn to use your natural birthing instincts for a calm, serene and comfortable birthing.
When you have your baby with HypnoBirthing®, you will not be in a trance or a sleep. What you will experience is similar to the daydreaming or focusing that occurs when you are engrossed in a book or a movie or staring into a fire.
You will be conversant and in good spirits–totally relaxed, but fully in control. Awake throughout, you will be aware of your body’s surges; but because you will have trained yourself to reach complete relaxation, you will be able to determine the degree to which you will feel the surges. You will experience birthing in an atmosphere of calm relaxation, free of the fear and tension that prevents the muscles of your body from functioning as nature intended them to. In this calm state your body’s natural relaxant, endorphins, replaces the stress hormones that constrict and cause pain.
Trained educators of HypnoBirthing® are successfully teaching women and their birthing companions relaxation techniques of HypnoBirthing® that eliminate the Fear-Tension-Pain Syndrome.
The Bradley Method
The Bradley Method® teaches natural childbirth and views birth as a natural process. It is our belief that most women with proper education, preparation, and the help of a loving and supportive coach can be taught to give birth naturally. The Bradley Method® is a system of natural labor techniques in which a woman and her coach play an active part. It is a simple method of increasing self-awareness, teaching a woman how to deal with the stress of labor by tuning in to her own body. The Bradley Method® encourages mothers to trust their bodies using natural breathing, relaxation, nutrition, exercise, and education.
The Bradley Method® teaches couples ways to stay low risk. While occasionally there are risk factors out of your control, staying healthy and low risk can help to avoid complications. Low risk mothers have more choices.
Relaxation is the Key to The Bradley Method® during labor. It is the safest and most effective way to reduce unnecessary pain and to handle any pain that you do experience. While other methods seek to control the sensations of labor (emphasizing distraction as their Primary labor control technique), The Bradley Method® encourages mothers to trust their bodies (emphasizing relaxed abdominal breathing and relaxation throughout labor).
Birthing From Within
You need two kinds of knowing to birth from within. The first and most basic is the intuitive knowing in your bones. The second kind of knowing is modern knowing—being savvy about the birth culture and the wide range of birth choices.
BIRTHING FROM WITHIN® classes offer you a soulful and holistic approach to birth preparation that integrates both kinds of knowing. Our classes prepare you to birth-in-awareness whether you are birthing at home, in a birth center, tipi, taxi or hospital.
BIRTHING FROM WITHIN classes go beyond what other childbirth classes offer. In addition to learning lots of practical information, you will deepen your intuitive knowing through thought-provoking dialogues, interesting birth videos, and memorable exercises.
The pain-coping confidence you develop in your BIRTHING FROM WITHIN class will support you in Laborland. You’ll experience a variety of pain-coping techniques which will help you cultivate the power of mindfulness, meditation and self-hypnosis. In addition to visualizations and learning age old practices from wisdom traditions, you will explore the wise use of drugs and epidurals should they become necessary.
No matter what kind of birth you are hoping and planning for (home birth, hospital birth, birth center birth, water birth, cesarean birth, natural birth, vaginal birth, medicated birth, etc.) you can birth-in-awareness, and we have something here to meet your needs and pique your interest.
